Tales
Ultra ℗ & © 2002 Krzysia GórniakAbout Tales
The album Tales was created in 1998-2000, during Krzysia Górniak’s stay at the music studies in Graz. The period of studies was a time of traveling around Europe and a time of meeting musicians from different cultures. Tales is an international project, founded with Greek bassist Evangelos Tzimkas. Each of the compositions on Tales tells a story, hence the title of the album. The first three songs are compositions by Evangelos Tzimkas: My Friends At Home was written for friends in Kozani (Greece) and for all the musicians who come from there. Your Smile I See is about the beautiful smile of a girl he was very much in love with, and who is now his good friend. The song Nicolas was written for Tzimkas’ younger brother during his stay in Vienna, when he missed their jokes together. The next four compositions on the album are written by Krzysia Górniak: Lakki dedicated to Tzimkas, who was her best friend during his studies. When I Leave was written when she was leaving Sloniki, and the memories of beautiful Greece were still in her mind. Mikko wrote for the Finnish guitarist and tells about his personality which is a perfect combination of silence and energy, and in his eyes there is always the shyness of the beautiful snowy plains of Finland. Friends is simply a humorous story about friendship. Wings, a joint composition by Tzimkas and Górniak, is about flying, when wings help the soul to soar. The latest composition on the album by guitarist M. Iivannainen A Tale is part of the Finnish landscape and also part of life, it can be a story of many things, good and bad, but returning towards goodness and happiness… Krzysia Górniak

Review
“(…) (Tales) ..these are stories that are often very private, lyrical, maintained in a refined ECM sound style. Themes or certain musical ideas become a kind of matter for the players, which they freely process for their own needs and it does not have to be subject to any stylistic restrictions or pressure from the listener. So, reflection, contemplation, and on the other hand epic momentum, an irresistible desire to make music together, to create an original mix of jazz, instrumental pop and even Latino. Unpretentious music that everyone can listen to. For listeners not fully accustomed to jazz, the Tales album will be an excellent source of moods, for jazz lovers – an opportunity to enjoy the nuances and colors of improvisations, strongly subdued in this case.” Przemek Psikuta, Jazz Forum 6/2002, str.74
